Uniten’s solar car shines at world race challenge

ADELAIDE: Universiti Tenaga Nasional’s (Uniten) Solar Ranger came in 23rd in the World Solar Challenge 2009.
Solar Ranger successfully finished the race at Victoria Square here at 11.40am yesterday.
The Uniten solar car had earlier faced technical problems before the race began while going from Sydney to Darwin last week.
Merdeka 2, the other Malaysian solar-powered car from Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing, also took part but was not able to beat the deadline.

The race was won by Tokai Challenger from Japan’s Tokai University.
The car clocked 29 hours and 49 minutes over four days for the 3,021km race across the Australian Outback from Darwin to Adelaide.
Dutch team Solar Nuon with their car Nuna5 took the second spot while the United States’ University of Michigan’s car romped to third place with their Infinium in the race that began on Oct 25.
To qualify as participants in the race, all 32 of the solar-powered cars from 15 countries had to reach Victoria Square before noon on Saturday, the seventh day of the race.
The last car to cross the finishing line was Apogee from Stanford University at 2.07pm. — Bernama
