NILAI International University College (Nilai-UC) aims to make the study of ethics part of its curriculum soon. Noted speaker Tunku Abdul Aziz was recently invited to share his views on the subject in a series of talks organised by the university college at its premises in Negri Sembilan.
Tunku Abdul Aziz was special adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 2006 to 2007, and the founder of Transparency International Malaysia.
“Whatever is morally wrong cannot be politically right,” he said, quoting US president Abraham Lincoln, in his talk entitled “Enhancing ethical conduct through education”.
He highlighted problems faced by the nation and pointed out that the long-term viability of any nation depended on good governance underpinned by strong ethical values.
As such, Tunku Abdul Aziz felt that it was imperative for ethics to be taught as a subject in schools and tertiary education institutions.
“Ethics education will have far-reaching effects on the future of our country. Of that I am absolutely convinced,” he said.
p Meanwhile, the university college also held its annual Family Week recently. The event culminated in a special talk for parents on the final day.
Gloriasa L. A. Rajendran, who is on the board of directors of Focus on the Family Malaysia, presented a talk entitled “Different phases of parenting”.
“Parenting is the art of nurturing a child and is one of the most challenging tasks in the world. Yet, there is nowhere to train parents,” said Gloriasa.
Besides the informative talk, many parents, some of whom had come from as far away as Kedah, also took the chance to meet academic and administrative staff at the university college.
