KUALA LUMPUR: Team EcoVision won the Gold award at the national finals of the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards (YEA) 2010/11 last night.
Comprising Taylor’s University students Gan Mei Lei, Lim Sher Li and Chong Pei Wah, the team walked away with a RM15,000 self-development fund as well as trophies and certificates.
The team will also represent Malaysia in the regional finals in Hong Kong in June to compete for a business development fund worth HK$100,000 (RM38,000).
Sher Li said the team members were looking forward to pitching their idea at the regional competition.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand our knowledge and to meet like-minded people from other countries,” she said.
Titled “Advanced Crab Technology”, team EcoVision’s idea is an environmentally-friendly method of cultivating soft-shell crabs that is more hygienic and uses less land area.
HSBC Bank Malaysia executive director and deputy chief executive Jon Addis said the overall quality of participants was strong.
“While some could have improved on their presentation skills, all the teams had solid ideas that have potential for commercialisation,” said Addis, who was the chief judge of the finals.
UCSI University students Koh Hui Kieng and Yeong Hoe Kin of The Green Team won the Silver award, while the Bronze went to team e-Saver Inc comprising Universiti Teknologi Petronas students Mohammad Sollehuddin Sabtu and Muhammad Nur Iman Zahari.
Launched in Malaysia in 2001, the HSBC YEA runs concurrently in six other countries – Hong Kong, Thailand, Brunei, Bangladesh, the Philippines and China-Shanghai.
The annual competition aims to encourage entrepreneurship among youths. It is open to undergraduates and postgraduates from public and private institutions of higher learning.
